The eggs of some others, like the salt marsh mosquito, are laid at the edge of the water or in the soft mud; these are not collected in masses and do not float. Eggs of the malarial mosquito float singly upon the surface of the water. The eggs of all species hatch in a few hours and the young larvae or wrigglers feed in the water on minute particles of vegetable matter. The blood of man or some of the higher animals seems to be a necessary food for egg production. Mosquitoes may live for about five weeks in summer, but they usually die after laying eggs. Some kinds of mosquitoes hide away in cellars, caves and other protected places during the winter, emerging in spring to lay eggs for the first brood. Certain other kinds pass the winter in the larval state, freezing up in the ice and going on with their development after thawing out in the spring.
